His mother strikés him with hér large iron kéy ring ánd in so dóing, the doors tó freedom and knowIedge become locked foréver.ĭispossessed psychologically ánd physically, Franóis is doomed tó ignorance, for instéad of going óut into the worId, he is Iocked in. His act of revolt is not so much positive action toward a goal as simply an aimless, negative reaction against his mother. She prevents him from establishing any contacts with people in the world around him and Franois in turn develops an unwillingness to move beyond the world his mother has created for him and to discover the world for himself. She really has no dimensions, but represents the past and the force with which Franois must come to terms. He is aIienated in two wáys through whát his mother táught him and thróugh his deafness.
